OVERVIEW

AST provides an American education for children in grades Pre-Kindergarten through grade 10 (ages 3 to 16), and is located in the Tripoli suburb of Seraj. We will add grade 11 in the 2009-2010 school year and grade 12 the year following.

AST strives to offer the best possible US educational program, based on the standards of high achieving schools in the United States. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Office of Overseas Schools, we deliver an American curriculum based on the challenging academic standards developed by Project AERO (American Education Reaches Out). It is also our goal to ensure that students move easily into U.S. or other American international schools when they leave AST.

Our mission is also to provide students with the knowledge of and an appreciation for different world cultures, including those of our host country.

Our teachers are qualified educators who are familiar with the best practices of American education and who are experienced teaching American and international students overseas.

Small class sizes also provide teachers with the opportunity to meet individual student needs. Specialist classes are offered in Physical Education, Music, Computer/Technology, Library Skills, Art, Arabic Language and Libyan Culture, as well as Spanish and various electives in Grades 7 - 10. Further courses will be added with the addition of grades 11 & 12.

The AST facilities include a volleyball and basketball courts, a soccer field, and several other grass playing areas for children. The library contains over 5,000 titles of English language books, and the computer lab has Internet access for student and faculty research.

Pre-school applicants must be three years old by October 1st and out of diapers. To be eligible for Kindergarten, children must be five years old by October 1st.

Students in grades 1 and 2 should have some understanding of spoken English in order to be admitted. Students must demonstrate more English language proficiency in grades 3 - 5 and need to have mastered enough English in order to be successful in grades 6 - 12.
